Today my son was sick so Mrs. Kiolbasa was my substitute.  I know that the students will do well with her.

They are continuing to learn new vocabulary words in Science.  Be sure to review them every night or every other night.

We will have a Math Test tomorrow on the concepts we have learned so far this year.  You might want to review length (long side of shape) and width (short side).  They had a Fact Assessment today.  Keep working on their Addition Facts.

This will be my sign off for the week as we don't have time most Fridays to blog.

Have a great weekend and don't get to sun burnt.  I will see the kids after Labor Day.

2 POSTS TODAY

Some parents are struggling to write comments.  I scroll down to the bottom of that days blog.  At the bottom it says COMMENTS. Click on comments or the pencil.  Scroll down on that page and leave a comment.  Then click on PUBLISH.  I hope this works.  I tried it on my computer at home.

Mrs. Matthies
Parents:
I know there are kids wanting to write this but time runs out and I forget to have them write.  The day is just too fast.

We have had a great day.  DIBELS testing was done today.  This is a reading test given to each student to better evaluate each them.  It will help us find kids that are struggling and be sure to keep track of them throughout the year.  Because of testing, we were not able to have Science.  We did a little Art instead.

The students are really starting to learn the routine and know where to be.  Yeah for them!

In Math today we studied time.  Specifically we talk about half past an hour.  This is something that does not come naturally to me just as left and right don't.  (Now ask me where something is north, south, east, and west and I have it!)  I told the students I am terrible at clocks and really have to think when I name the hands.  We giggled a lot today.  And yes, I can tell time, just so we are clear. ;)  I really think that it is important to let students see that even adults struggle with concepts and we all make mistakes.

Hopefully, the students will help me remember to blog at the end of the day before recess.

Mrs. Matthies

Monday, August 19, 2013

Leave me a comment here, email me or write a note if you looked at the blog tonight.  My email was on the brochure from Open House or when your child brought it home the 1st day.

Please send your child's library card to school.  If they can't find it the library will issue them a new one for $1.  Bookmobile will be here every other Wednesday.

Thank you,
Mrs. M.

Art -
Tissue paper eggs for spring.

The kids are really excited about picking their site for the Community Project.  It has been really fun talking and learning about the history of Hastings.  We have learned quite a lot.  We have talked a lot about why Hastings wanted to be the County Seat and have the Courthouse here.  We have also talked about how important the railroad was to any town on the praire.  It was very interesting to teach the kids about how you had to "go to town" to buy groceries, and how you didn't go to town very often if was far away.

We have also talked about the four brick factories in Hastings.  They were interested because some of the kids have visited Brickyard Park.

We will soon be talking about more of the parks, several different downtown buildings, and more about the streetcars that were in Hastings.
